Gingerbread Men -- 12/17/2010
Occasionally I break away from cakes... Not often, but occasionally. :) Actually every Christmas the kids and I will make two batches of cookies - Christmas cookies (the sugar variety that they love to put gobs and gobs of icing on... You know the ones...) and a batch of gingerbread men - my favorites. I love making these guys. We always make a gingerbread house too, but we do the prebaked kind and that's mostly just for them. For the cookies the kids help me mix up the dough, roll it out and cut out the shapes. I made a double batch this year because there was a big family Christmas party we were going to and there was a cookie swap. I knew these little guys would be just perfect...
Strawberry Shortcake - 11/23/2010
Out of all the cakes I've made, this just might be my favorite. I was so intimidated by the thought of trying this cake pan - mainly because it's been retired and that also means that the icing colors were retired. I drove all over town (and Knoxville) looking for skin toned icing tint. No luck. I bought brown and peach. I had no idea what I was going to do. Luckily it turned out just fine. I used the tiniest bit of brown added to white and it made the perfect skin color - or so we all thought! I also made Strawberry Shortcake's hair long, because the decorations had long hair and the pan didn't and Rachel really wanted her to have long hair. I think it turned out pretty cute. :) She was very happy and that really made me happy. I did learn to buy bigger cake boards than the actual cakes so I can add a bottom border. That cake just barely fit in my cake taker... Someone please invent a larger cake taker! The cake below is the cake she celebrated with on her actual birthday. It was just a 6 inch layer cake with a Strawberry figurine on top.
Abby Cadabby Cake - 09/05/2010
I got to make sweet little Lydia's 3rd birthday cake -- Abby Cadabby! What a cute theme for a party! All girly purple and pink! I learned a valuable lesson with this cake though -- Don't ever, ever use whipped icing to decorate a cake with. I finished stacking and adding details to this cake right before we headed over to Chris's house to celebrate. Sadly on the drive there, the bottom layer slid apart, even with dowels holding it together -- all due to the whipped icing (I had run out of decorator icing and used a can that I had in the pantry). I was completely crazy and disheartened by the time we got to Chris's house and tried to fix it, but there wasn't a whole lot I could do. Lydia didn't seem to care though. Thank goodness three year olds aren't too picky!
Princess Teaparty Cake - 08/07/2010
2 Tiered 'Princess Teaparty' cake - a tiara and scepter were added later at the birthday party to finish it off. This is the very first cake I ever sold... I made it for a friend who I went to school with K-12th grade. Her daughter was having a Princess Teaparty themed birthday. It was also the first 2 tier cake I ever made - talk about nervous! It turned out good though and she seemed very pleased with it and placed more orders in the future. :)
Kate's 1st Birthday Bear Cakes - 03/30/2010
Kate had a very pink first birthday celebration. I knew I wanted to make the 3d bear pan by Wilton for her cake and was absolutely thrilled when I found a mini pan to make her smash cake with! I made her big bear out of yellow cake and iced it with chocolate. It was so cute and he was even holding a pink balloon in his hand. Her smash cake was a smaller white bear on a single layer cake with pink details. They were both a big hit!
Kate's #1 Cake - 03/30/2010
I made three seperate cakes for Kate's first birthday. We had a yellow cake bear cake with chocolate icing, a small white bear smash cake and this number 1 cake that was white cake. I made this cake because the men in our family are white cake/white icing kind of guys and I always try to make cakes that everyone can enjoy. Plus it's always fun to make more cake! The chick on the cake was mirrored from her 1st birthday invitation. I just fell in love with that little guy and decided he needed to be included on the cake. :)

Hello Kitty Birthday Cake II - 11/28/2009
Rachel enjoyed her 4th birthday party at Sandy Springs Park and celebrated with the aforementioned Hello Kitty theme. For her party we celebrated with an 8 in layer cake with Hello Kitty cake on the top made of white cake and chocolate flower cupcakes for the chocolate lovers. She was a happy girl!
